Nila Madhava das (Anish Pillai) started practicing bhakti yoga from a young age, growing up in a family that is a part of the local Hare Krishna community in Houston. After a holy pilgrimage to India during his teenage years, he became inspired to learn how to do kirtan (sacred music or chanting). It has become a part of his life, as he often leads kirtans at the temple, at homes, and in the community, sharing it with those who are looking for spiritual connection through music. While bhakti yoga is a central part of his life, he is a healthcare administrator by profession, having worked in the healthcare industry for over 10 years. Nila, along with his wife and two kids, lives in Houston and actively serves the local Hare Krishna community.
Krishnaya has been a Bharatnatyam dancer for the past 18 years. She studied at the prestigious Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts, Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai and is currently under the tutelage of Guru Srimati Varsha Akhouri.
My journey into the world of Kirtan began with my birth into a family of devout followers. My parents introduced me to the Hare Krishna movement at a very young age, setting the foundation for my life’s passion. I further pursued my spiritual education at the Gurukula in Nova Gokula farm, Pindamonhangaba, Brazil. There, I received extensive training in the Bhagavad-Gita, which helped me develop a profound connection with Kirtan.
My Kirtan journey started early when, at age 11, I began leading chantings at the local Hare Krishna temple in Brasília. My passion for Kirtan continued to flourish. I pursued a formal music education at the Escola de Música de Brasila, a traditional Western music school in Brazil, where I learned the basics and built a necessary base to build Kirtans on.
Kirtan has the power to transform people’s lives, and it is an essential tool for cultivating pure devotion (Bhakti). Therefore, I encourage everyone to chant with their full energy and attention during Kirtan events. While chanting the Maha Mantra Hare Krishna, I invite you to connect with your soul and allow the love in your heart to inspire others to do the same.
